Helena South Hills

There is a specific kind of civic pride in Helena, and it has nothing to do with the gold dome on the capitol building. It has to do with the fact that you can roll out of a downtown brewery, clip into your pedals, and immediately access seventy-five miles of world-class singletrack without ever touching pavement.

The South Hills Trail System is a masterclass in urban trail planning. The dirt here is decomposed granite, which means it drains beautifully and grips like velcro. You can ride here earlier in the spring and later in the fall than almost anywhere else in the state. The climbs are punchy, the descents are fast, and the network is so densely woven that you can link up a three-mile lunch ride or a fifty-mile death march without repeating a segment. It is the kind of town where you show up for a weekend and start looking at real estate prices on Monday morning.
