Taft Area
Located on the Montana-Idaho border, the Route of the Hiawatha is not a traditional mountain bike trail. It is a historic rail-trail, utilizing the abandoned grade of the Milwaukee Road railroad. It is included here because it is one of the most unique and spectacular cycling experiences in the region.
The trail features 10 dark railroad tunnels and 7 massive steel trestle bridges, cutting through the rugged Bitterroot Mountains. The grade is a gentle 1.6 percent downhill, making it accessible to families and riders of all abilities. A trail pass is required, and a shuttle service is available to return riders to the top.
Must-Ride Feature: The St. Paul Pass Tunnel is 1.6 miles long and pitch black, requiring powerful bike lights and a warm jacket to navigate.
