Approximate

Rising abruptly from the plains of central Montana, the Big Snowy Mountains offer an isolated and spectacular riding experience. The range is characterized by a massive, eight-mile-long, tundra-like meadow that runs along the summit ridge at over 8,000 feet.

The trails here are raw and remote. Trail 490 traverses the open ridgeline, marked only by rock cairns, offering panoramic views of the surrounding prairie. The climbs to reach the ridge are steep and demanding, and the descents are fast and loose. This is true backcountry riding, far from bike shops or cell service. The trails are managed by the US Forest Service, and access is free.

Must-Ride Trail: The Big Snowy Mountains Loop is a 12-mile advanced route that takes you up to the tundra ridge and back down through dense timber.
