Beartooth Mountains, Stillwater County

The Stillwater Complex is a layered mafic intrusion, formed 2.7 billion years ago. Within this ancient rock lies the J-M Reef, a layer just one to three meters thick that contains the highest-grade platinum and palladium deposit in the Western Hemisphere.

Visitor Access

This is an active, large-scale commercial mining operation located entirely on private land. It is strictly closed to the public. The geology can only be viewed from a distance on the public forest roads that approach the Beartooth front.
