Park County, Wyoming (Extending from Montana)

Heart Mountain is the most famous remnant of the Heart Mountain Detachment, the largest known terrestrial landslide in Earth's history. Forty-nine million years ago, a massive block of Paleozoic limestone detached from its foundation near the present-day Montana border and slid catastrophically over thirty miles across the Eocene landscape.

Visitor Access

The mountain itself is owned by The Nature Conservancy. Hiking to the summit is free and open to the public, offering a visceral look at the displaced limestone block. At the base of the mountain sits the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, a museum dedicated to the WWII Japanese-American confinement camp located there, which charges an admission fee.
