Carbon County
The Pryor Mountains are an uplifted block of ancient granites capped by Paleozoic marine limestones. On the eastern flank of the mountains, in Bear Canyon, the weathering rock yields spherical geodes. Their hollow interiors are lined with drusy quartz and often rimmed with striking black-and-white fortification agate.
Visitor Access
Bear Canyon sits on public BLM land. Access is free, and rockhounds can collect up to twenty-five pounds of geodes and agate per day. The area is remote, dry, and rugged; visitors must bring their own water and be prepared for harsh backcountry conditions.
