Madison County
Near the town of Sheridan, Indian Creek flows out of the Tobacco Root Mountains. The geology here is complex, a mix of ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks and later intrusions. For the rockhound, the draw is massive, banded formations of calcite, often alternating in striking colors of white and pink.
Visitor Access
Access here is tricky; it is a mix of public land accessed via private roads or easements. Collecting is generally allowed on the public parcels for personal, non-commercial use, but visitors must carry a map, respect private property boundaries, and confirm land status before picking up a hammer. A Montana Conservation License may be required to access certain state lands in the area.
