Broadwater County

Discovered in 1864 by paroled Confederate soldiers, Confederate Gulch contained placer gold deposits of staggering richness. Diamond City sprang up overnight, and the area produced an estimated thirty million dollars in gold. Today, the gold is mostly gone, and Diamond City is a ghost town.

Visitor Access

The gulch sits within the Big Belt Mountains on a mix of Forest Service and private land. The unimproved dirt roads require high clearance and are often impassable in wet weather or winter. Hiking and historical exploration on the public lands are free. Panning is permitted on the Forest Service parcels under standard recreational rules, provided you are not jumping an active claim.
