History & Heritage

History & Heritage

The story of St. Ignatius is woven into the very fabric of Montana's formation, predating statehood itself. Before European arrival, the lush Mission Valley was home to the Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Orielle peoples, who thrived on the abundant resources provided by the mountains and wetlands. The European chapter began in 1854 when Jesuit priest Father Pierre-Jean De Smet established the St. Ignatius Mission, naming it after Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order.

The mission quickly became a cultural and educational center, with one of Montana's first churches and schools. The current brick mission church, built between 1891 and 1893, stands as a testament to the community's resilience and cultural fusion. Its 58 remarkable murals, painted by Brother Joseph Carignano (the mission's cook), uniquely blend Christian imagery with representations of Salish belief systems.

In 1919, disaster struck when a massive forest fire destroyed nearly the entire town, sparing only a bank, a store, a hotel, and the mission church. Undeterred, residents rebuilt, modernizing with a standalone hospital separate from the mission. Throughout its history, St. Ignatius has maintained its identity as a meeting place of cultures, with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes playing a central role in preserving the area's natural and cultural heritage, including the designation of the Mission Mountains Tribal Wilderness in 1979—the only tribal wilderness in the nation.

Fort ConnahDeep Read

Construction of the last Hudson Bay Trading Post, within the present borders of the United States, was started here in 1846, and was completed in 1847 by Angus McDonald. Angus originally named the fort "Connen" after a river valley in his Scottish homeland, but later changed it to Connah for easier pronunciation by the Salish, Kootenai, Pend d'Oreille and other Indians in there area.

Fort Connah was built about 1/2 mile east of here and remained an important trading center for the Indians until the U.S. Government forced the British owned company to abandon the post in 1871. At its height, Fort Connah consisted of only three buildings. The store house is the only original structure that still survives.

The Mission Valley was thrown open for settlement in 1910. Prior to that time it was almost entirely virgin prairie, unplowed, unfenced and beautiful to see. You road a saddle horse to get places. Some people wish it were still like that today.

Many descendants of Angus McDonald still live in the Mission Valley.

St Ignatius Mission

This church, dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the society of Jesus, was built in 1891. In 1840, Fr. Peter DeSmet came to Montana in response to the request of four separate delegations of Indians, and in 1841, he established St. Mary's Mission at Stevensville.

In 1853, St. Ignatius Mission was founded to serve the religious and educational needs of the Salish and Kootenai people. Father Hoecken and his Jesuit helpers built the original log cabin which still stands on the north side of this church. Within 35 years the mission included a large school, a sawmill, printing press, flour mill, hospital, farm and the present church.

The renowned murals in this church were painted by Br. Joseph Carignano, S.J., the mission cook.

In 1973, this mission was declared a National Historic Site.
