History & Heritage

History & Heritage

Denton is a remote, tightly-knit farming community nestled in the rolling plains of central Montana. The town’s history is inextricably linked to the homesteading boom of the early 20th century, when the fertile soils of the Judith Basin drew thousands of hopeful farmers to the region. The arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (the "Milwaukee Road") cemented Denton's status as a critical shipping hub for the massive quantities of wheat and cattle produced in the surrounding valleys. Though the railroad eventually ceased operations, Denton survived the agricultural consolidations of the 20th century and remains a proud, classic Montana farming town where generations of families still work the land.
