History & Heritage

History & Heritage

The Conrad brothers arrived in Montana Territory in 1868 and built mercantile and ranching enterprises from Fort Benton. In 1889 they assembled a 200,000-acre ranch from Dupuyer to the Marias River. M.S. Darling, engineer for the Conrad Investment Company, platted the townsite in 1902. The Great Northern Railway completed the Lethbridge-Great Falls line in 1902; the company deeded 600 acres to the railroad. Conrad incorporated September 24, 1908. The Lake Frances irrigation project commenced to enable dryland farming. Population peaked at 3,074 in 1980. The 1917–1930s droughts devastated agriculture; wheat harvests fell up to 80% in severe years. A proposed Safeguard antiballistic missile site in the late 1960s was cancelled in 1976 after partial construction. The Western Triangle Agricultural Research Center addresses regional drought and pest challenges.
