Chouteau County

When the Laurentide Ice Sheet blocked the ancestral Missouri River, it forced the water to carve a new path eastward. As the river cut down through the sedimentary rock, it exposed the Virgelle Member of the Eagle Formation. These are the White Cliffs of the Missouri, a labyrinth of hoodoos, spires, and sheer white walls rising hundreds of feet above the river.

Visitor Access

The cliffs are located within the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument, managed by the BLM. Access is primarily by boat. It is a world-class scenic float trip. Collecting vertebrate fossils or historical artifacts is strictly prohibited, but the monumental geology is free to view from the water.
