Originally known as Belton, West Glacier’s significance grew with the Great Northern Railway’s arrival in 1890. The Belton Chalets (1910) welcomed early park visitors. In 1949, the town was renamed West Glacier to reflect its role as the park’s gateway. The region is historically important to the Blackfeet, Salish, Pend d’Oreille, and Kootenai tribes.
