On October 11, 1890, Frances Webster Wickes gathered women in Helena to form the Fortnightly Club “for the purpose of studying English literature.” It was the first such literary society in Montana and a marker of how quickly the new state’s capital was building a civic culture beyond mines and politics.

Members met every two weeks to read, debate, and claim intellectual space in a city still shedding its gulch-town past. The club endured—an unbroken thread from territorial afterglow into the present.

In a state often narrated through strikes, storms, and railroads, the Fortnightly Club records another Montana story: women organizing for books, conversation, and a public life of the mind.
