Gilt Edge History
The east side of the Judith Mountains was always the poor relation of the west side. When gold was discovered in the Judith range in the early 1880s, the camps that sprang up on the western slopes, Maiden above all, got the attention and the investment. The eastern side had gold too, but it was the kind of gold that frustrated the miners of that era: low-grade ore disseminated through the rock in concentrations too thin to work profitably with the stamp mills and amalgamation processes of the day. The men who prospected the eastern Judiths in 1883 and staked the claims that would eventually become the Gilt Edge district went home with little to show for their work, and the camp they briefly established faded before it had a chance to grow.
The transformation came in 1892, when a new chemical process arrived in the Judith Mountains that changed the economics of low-grade gold mining entirely. Cyanide leaching, which dissolved gold from crushed ore using a sodium cyanide solution and then recovered the metal through precipitation, had been developed in Scotland in the late 1880s and was beginning to spread through the American mining industry. At Gilt Edge, the process was applied to the district's ore bodies in 1892 or 1893, making it one of the first operations in the United States to use the technology commercially. Whether Gilt Edge was truly the first or merely among the first is a point of local debate, but the historical record is clear that the cyanide mill established at the site was a pioneering installation that attracted attention from mining engineers and investors across the country.
The results justified the attention. The cyanide process extracted gold from ore that had been worthless under the old methods, and the Gilt Edge mine began producing in earnest. The camp that grew up around the mill was a working industrial settlement rather than a speculative boomtown, its character shaped by the steady rhythms of a chemical processing operation rather than the feverish excitement of a placer rush. Fergus County would go on to use cyanide gold mining for fifty consecutive years, from 1893 to 1943, a record that few counties in the United States could match, and Gilt Edge was where that long run began.
The district's most colorful chapter involved a man known as "Honest Bob" Ammon, whose nickname was ironic in the way that frontier nicknames often were. Ammon's involvement in the Gilt Edge district became one of the more elaborate frauds in the annals of central Montana mining, a story of inflated production figures, misrepresented assay results, and investors who wanted to believe in the mine's potential badly enough to overlook the warning signs. The details of the Ammon affair were well known to the mining community of the 1890s and contributed to the district's complicated reputation as a place where the chemistry was sound but the business practices were not always trustworthy.
The mine continued to operate through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with production fluctuating as ore grades varied and metal prices moved. In 1917 a cyanide plant was built at the original 1892 mill site to reprocess the old tailings, extracting additional gold from material that had already been processed once. The tailings reprocessing operation was short-lived, but it reflected the ongoing interest in the district's potential and the improving efficiency of cyanide technology over the decades since its introduction.
The last significant mining at Gilt Edge came in the modern era, when a heap leach operation processed ore from the district using the same basic cyanide chemistry that had been applied there a century earlier. Mining ended in 1991, and the site subsequently became the focus of environmental remediation work related to the acid drainage and metal contamination associated with the old workings. The Gilt Edge mine site is listed as a Superfund cleanup location, and remediation work has been ongoing since the mine's closure.
The town of Gilt Edge itself was always modest in scale, a service community for the mine rather than a commercial center in its own right. The workers who operated the cyanide mill and maintained the mine's underground workings needed housing, food, and the basic amenities of community life, and Gilt Edge provided those things for as long as the mine required them. When the mine closed, the town had no reason to exist, and it did not.
What Remains Today
The Gilt Edge mine site is an active Superfund remediation area, and public access to the mine workings and processing facilities is restricted. The landscape around the former townsite shows the evidence of more than a century of mining activity: waste rock piles, tailings deposits, and the altered drainage patterns that characterize a heavily worked gold district. The remediation work has stabilized the most acute environmental problems, but the site will require ongoing management for the foreseeable future.
The broader Judith Mountains area around Gilt Edge is accessible via county roads from Lewistown, and the drive through the eastern Judiths provides a sense of the terrain that shaped the district's history. The contrast between the open plains visible from the mountain slopes and the compact, rocky terrain of the range itself helps explain why the Judith Mountains mining districts developed the character they did.
Visiting
Gilt Edge is located in the Judith Mountains east of Lewistown in Fergus County. The access roads from Lewistown are generally passable in dry conditions, though the upper sections can be rough. The Superfund designation means that the mine site itself is not open for casual exploration, and visitors should stay on established roads and respect the remediation boundaries.
Lewistown, the Fergus County seat, is the practical base for exploring the Judith Mountains ghost towns. The Lewistown Chamber of Commerce produces a brochure covering the ghost towns and gold mines of the area, including Gilt Edge, Maiden, Kendall, and Fort Maginnis. The Central Montana Museum in Lewistown maintains exhibits on the mining history of the region and provides useful context for understanding the significance of the cyanide technology that Gilt Edge helped introduce to American gold mining.
